Founded by Cliff van Tonder, CEO and MD of the charitable community organisation Surrey Music, the non-audition choir’s ethos is one of fun and friendship and giving something back to the community. The choir is becoming firmly established in the community, with frequent requests for public and radio performances. Under the inspiring direction of Musical Director Christopher Wray, the choir enjoys a diverse repertoire and creates an awesome SATB choral sound. BRIGHTON GAY MEN'S CHORUS BRIGHTON & HOVE UNITED KINGDOM Type: TTBB Founded: 2005 # Wonderful Supporting members 0 # Wonderful members 107 ABOUT Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus (BrightonGMC) was created in January 2005 when a small group of friends who loved singing were disappointed at the lack of a non-scene space in which to socialise. They decided it was high time Brighton & Hove had its first gay male voice choir and so created a space where people can celebrate music, enjoy the fellowship of other like-minded people and contribute to the local communities of which we are part. ​ At its heart BrightonGMC is a community chorus. New members are always welcome and we don‘t hold auditions. ​ BrightonGMC is the biggest gay men’s chorus in UK outside of London. May 3 - 8, 2005 11TH FESTIVAL VARIOUS VOICES 2005 PARIS 58 Choirs from 10 Countries and 1,350 singers MÉLO 'MEN EQUIVOX Why Paris? Over the course of the last three years, we have often been asked Why host the 11th edition of the Various Voices Festival in Paris? Since its birth in 1985 in Cologne, Germany, the first ten editions of the Festival took place in German cities or in neighboring Northern-European Cities. The Festival has left its German roots only five times previous and has yet to be hosted by a Southern-European city. We are also responding to European choirs' unanimous demand to organize the Festival in Paris. This desire comes not only from the Legato Board but also from the festival participants expressing their wish to take the Festival out of Germany and to spend a weekend singing and celebrating in Paris. As this marks the first time the Festival has been held in France, we wanted to accentuate the singularity by giving the Festival a "French Touch". Starting with their arrival at the Welcome Center and up until the Farewell Brunch, festival participants will be honorary Parisians during their stay. We have chosen typically Parisians venues full of history and charm, to host the numerous festival events The Palais de la Mutualité for the Opening night "French Cabaret Gala, historic concert venues as La Cigale and Le Trianon, outdoor concerts in the Kiosques located throughout Paris numerous public parks and municipal gardens. The Parisian Edition of the Festival is therefore an occasion to further develop the European and international dimensions of Various Voices. This international dimension is reflected in the organizing team which is composed of French, American, English, Dutch, German and Swiss nationals. We are especially pleased to be able to play host this year to two non-European choirs. The Canberra Gay and Lesbian Choir (Australia} and the Ensemble Vocal Extravaganza de Montreal (Canada). GLÓRIA DUBLIN'S LESBIAN AND GAY CHOIR DUBLIN IRELAND Type: SATB Founded: 1995 # Wonderful Supporting members 0 # Wonderful members 62 ABOUT Glória, Dublin’s Lesbian and Gay Choir, was founded in October 1995. An ad placed in Gay Community News invited singers interested in forming a choir. About 25 people came along on that first night – some who still sing with the choir – and today we have a singing membership of around 54. The choir’s repertoire is wide-ranging; from musicals to madrigals and from classical to camp. The songs are chosen sometimes to surprise, sometimes to challenge, but always to entertain! Founded in October 1995 Glória was originally established to provide a safe and comfortable space for gay and lesbian people to meet and sing together, and to promote a positive image of Ireland’s growing LGBT community. Glória maintains an environment that is inclusive, welcoming and supportive of people from all backgrounds and different life experiences irrespective of gender identity, or sexuality. Just as our repertoire is varied so is our membership, with singers from all walks of life. And for some, it has been the place where they met Glória has performed extensively throughout Ireland in Dublin, Belfast, Carlingford, Castlebar, Cavan, Cork, Drogheda, Dun Laoghaire, Galway, Limerick, New Ross, Tralee, Sligo, Waterford, and Westport. We are looking forward to adding to this list in the future. Do get in touch if you think you might be able to host a concert or if you would like to invite us to sing at some event or other. Internationally the choir has traveled to perform in London on a number of occasions, and in connection with the GALA Choruses Festivals, we have been to Montréal in Canada and twice to the US; to Boston, Miami, and San José. SHANSONS DOETINCHEM THE NETHERLANDS Type: TTBB Founded: 1998 # Wonderful Supporting members 0 # Wonderful members 20 ABOUT Shansons is een mannenkoor dat bestaat uit 24 enthousiaste homo- en biseksuele mannen uit de Achterhoek, Liemers en omstreken. Het koor is opgericht in 1999 en sinds 2005 is de muzikale leiding in handen van dirigent Harry Thissen. Het gevarieerde repertoire dat gezongen wordt bestaat onder andere uit nummers van The Beatles, Robbie Williams, John Legend, Billy Joel, The King's Singers en W.A. Mozart. Shansons treedt graag op, de afgelopen jaren heeft het koor naast leuke optredens in de regio ook enkele verrassende optredens gehad. Zo stond het koor op de Zwarte Cross in Lichtenvoorde.
